*** UPDATE *** Apparently this is no longer needed. Please go here to root your Android 2.3.3 devices!
I am posting this to help all those people out there that would like to have a rooted Droid X2 with the Android 2.3.3 update. These steps have worked for me many times with multiple Droid X2′s. Please remember that there is always a risk of breaking your phone when performing any of these steps and I take no responsibility for anything that happens as I am only providing this information for educational purposes.
**** Perform the following steps at your own risk ****
Files Needed: Download
RSD Lite 5.3.1
VRZ_MB870_DTN-14.8_1FF_01.sbf
Gingerbreak.1.2.apk
MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.apk
update.zip
Steps to perform
1: Unzip DroidX2_2.3.3_Root_Files.zip
2: Install Motorola Drivers if needed
3: Install RSD Lite 5.3.1
4: Turn Phone Off
5: Hold Volume Up Button and Press the Power Button
6: Release buttons once the screen reads “Starting RSD protocol support”
7: Plug the phone in to the computer via USB and wait for drivers to install
8: Lauch RSDLite (see note 1 below)
9: Click the … button next to the Filename field and choose the VRZ_MB870_DTN-14.8_1FF_01.sbf file
10: Click the Start button in RSD Lite
11: Wait for RSD Lite to show “Please power this phone on manually” under the status field
12: Once the phone is completely rebooted, go through the setup process (see note 2 below)
13: Connect the phone to the computer via USB
14: Copy Gingerbreak.1.2.apk and MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.apk, and update.zip to the phones sd card
15: Disconnect the phone from the computer
16: Install Gingerbreak.1.2.apk
17: Use Gingerbreak to root the phone
18: Once phone reboots, verify Superuser is installed
19: Install MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.apk
20: Launch the System Recovery app
21: Click the Install Recovery button
22: Plug the phone in to the charger (not usb to computer)
23: Click the Recovery Mode button (you will need to allow superuser permissions the first time)
24: Once phone reboots in to the recovery mode, choose to install the update.zip from the sd card
25: wait for the update to finish
26: once phone reboots, go through setup process
Note 1: If you are unable to install RSD Lite using the provided MSI file in step 8, you can download this file and unzip it to your computer. You can launch RSD Lite by starting the SDL.exe file provided.
Note 2: For step 12, you can skip through all the steps since your phone will be factory reset after step 25 is finished.
